Job Summary:
Sanctuary Personnel is seeking dedicated Band 5 Registered Nurses to join our client and to supervise and participate in the professional and skills development of both qualified and unqualified nursing staff. The successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge and competence in established procedures and policies, aiding newly appointed nursing staff to achieve the same level of proficiency. As effective role models, the post holders will:
- Be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programmes of care for patients.
- Deliver care in accordance with the current ward philosophy.
- Adhere to policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Regularly act as ward coordinator under the direction of the nurse in charge.
- Take charge of the ward and supervise nursing staff.
- Act as clinical supervisors and preceptors to develop the skills of first and second level nurses and nursing auxiliaries.
- Assist new staff in completing orientation and induction programmes.
- Guidance for personal development will be provided through regular formalised appraisal and performance reviews.
Summary of Practice Area:
Our client is a private facility within a main hospital, consisting of 19 single en suite rooms. The unit manages the care of patients with diverse needs, including surgical, medical, oncology, and end-of-life care, with both elective and emergency admissions. The unit values inter-professional working and maintains close relationships with various specialists and the multidisciplinary team. Nurses here are highly skilled professionals due to the absence of junior doctors, offering opportunities to enhance skills in various specialities. New staff are mentored through a comprehensive preceptorship period.
The wing is a welcoming environment for both newly qualified nurses and experienced nurses passionate about sharing their knowledge.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Practice and Philosophy of Nursing:
- Understand and adhere to the ward's philosophy.
- Work towards meeting the ward’s aims and objectives.
- Implement the theory and principles of the agreed nursing model.
- Manage the total care of a group of patients within the sphere of competence.
- Supervise newly qualified and unqualified staff.
- Ensure effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.
- Apply everyday practices to meet agreed standards for nursing care.
- Adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct.
- Comply with the locally agreed professional practice framework.
- Perform nursing procedures according to the Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Act as a named assessor for junior staff nurses and learners, facilitating their completion of approved competency programmes.
- Provide opportunities for qualified and unqualified nursing staff to achieve learning contract objectives.
- Maintain and develop skills to promote evidence-based practice.
- Supervise patients in all aspects of their care, offering professional advice and guidance.
- Recognise own limitations and refer to more experienced nurses as needed.
- Participate in clinical supervision.
Role Development:
- Agree on targets through formal appraisal and performance interviews to enhance professional development.
- Understand the role of Team Leader and provide professional support.
- Coordinate and lead the team in the absence of the Team Leader.
- Provide professional support to key multidisciplinary team members.
Health and Safety:
- Safeguard the welfare and safety of patients, staff, and self according to the Health and Safety at Work (General) Guernsey 1987 document.
- Report accidents and untoward incidents, completing relevant documentation.
- Follow safe moving and handling policies and procedures, including the effective use of equipment.
- Be proficient in basic life support techniques and know the effective use of resuscitation equipment.
- Adhere to fire safety regulations and Health and Social Services policies.
- Comply with Infection Control Manual policies and procedures.
- Ensure the safe use and maintenance of ward equipment.
- Understand the Major Incident Procedure and the nurse's role in it.
- Attend mandatory update sessions for Fire Safety, Basic Life Support, and Safe Moving and Handling.
Revalidation:
- Maintain effective registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
- Manage all aspects of Revalidation requirements, including maintaining an up-to-date portfolio.
- Assist colleagues with their Revalidation, including teaching, providing support, and participating in professional discussions.
- Escalate any issues with meeting Revalidation requirements to a senior nurse or midwife.
Key Criteria:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current first level registration with the NMC.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Completed an approved mentor course at level 2 or equivalent.
- Competence in intravenous drug administration.
- Portfolio of evidence to meet Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) criteria.
