The salary for this permanent Ward Manager job is £45,000 - £51,000 per annum.

Main Duties

  • Oversee ward operations and resource management: Ensure effective staffing levels and skill mix by managing rotas, coordinating annual leave and training, and handling sickness and absences.
  • Ensure comprehensive support for nursing staff: Provide clinical supervision, conduct appraisals, oversee Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and ensure completion of mandatory training for all team members.
  • Address development and performance issues: Identify and address gaps in training and performance to support staff development and improve service delivery.
  • Recognise and reward staff achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate positive performance and contributions in alignment with staff roles and responsibilities.
  • Act as a visible role model, mentor, and leader: Foster a culture of learning, development, and professionalism, celebrating successes and sharing knowledge to benefit the ward, hospital, and wider division.
  • Implement and monitor compliance with policies: Ensure adherence to relevant hospital, division, and group policies and statutory requirements, and address any issues promptly.
  • Maintain high standards of patient care: Take action to guarantee that patient care consistently meets the highest standards.
  • Ensure personalised, evidence-based care plans: Develop and maintain clear care plans for patients, reflecting their individual needs and ensuring family members and carers are appropriately involved.
  • Assess and manage patient needs comprehensively: Oversee the management of both physical and mental health needs of patients to ensure holistic care.
  • Establish and uphold ward procedures: Implement clear processes for the safe and effective operation of the ward, including patient nutrition and environmental cleanliness, using tools such as quality walk rounds.
  • Contribute to staff recruitment and retention: Play an active role in attracting and retaining skilled staff for the ward and hospital.
  • Ensure accurate and timely clinical communication: Manage clinical records, handovers, reports, and other patient-related information with precision.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships: Foster strong collaboration with both clinical and non-clinical colleagues.
  • Promote diversity and equality: Apply and advocate for diversity and equality principles within the ward.
  • Conduct thorough investigations: Manage clinical investigations, complaints, and HR-related issues, ensuring they are completed promptly and to a high standard.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative frameworks: Apply relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) in accordance with company policy and national requirements.
  • Manage Medicines within the clinical area: Oversee medicines management, ensuring all registered nurses complete competency-based assessments during induction and maintain an open, transparent approach to managing medication errors.
  • Collaborate with the ward pharmacist: Address findings from pharmacist audits and other requirements promptly.
  • Oversee incident reporting and corrective actions: Ensure timely completion of incident reports, take corrective actions as needed, and engage staff in the process.
  • Lead incident reviews and debriefs: Conduct team reviews of incidents and ensure staff receive timely debriefs.
  • Engage with the ward MDT (Multidisciplinary Team): Facilitate effective and positive collaboration with other MDT members.
  • Deputise for the Director of Clinical Services: Assume the role of Director of Clinical Services as needed, covering their responsibilities in their absence.

Requirements of the Ward Manager:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) Qualification: A valid nursing qualification, as well as registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or an equivalent body.
  • Clinical Experience: Significant experience as a registered nurse.
  • Leadership Experience: Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role within a clinical setting, such as a Charge Nurse or Deputy Ward Manager, is typically required.
