Main Duties & Responsibilities
As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Infection Sciences, you will be at the forefront of providing expert support in infection science diagnostics and treatments. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Specialist Laboratory Analysis: Perform and report on a range of advanced infection and molecular laboratory analyses to guide clinical diagnoses, treatment plans, and evaluation of therapeutic effectiveness.
- Prioritisation & Urgent Response: Use your expertise to prioritise urgent clinical needs and ensure quick turnaround times, contributing to infection control, safety programs, blood supply management, and hospital bed occupancy.
- Scientific Decision-Making: Take ownership of scientific decisions impacting patient care, working independently or leading a small team to report bacterial, viral, antimicrobial, antibody, and molecular testing results.
- Troubleshooting & Quality Control: Resolve technical issues with instrumentation and procedures, ensuring all laboratory work adheres to quality acceptance criteria.
- Lead Role in Management: Take the lead on specific areas such as IT systems, health and safety, audit, supplier management, or the introduction of new scientific techniques.
- Collaboration & Networking: Collaborate with colleagues at all levels, including off-island consultants, providing expert advice on techniques, guidelines, specimens, and examinations.
- Quality Assurance: Monitor internal and external quality assurance, participate in audits, and contribute to external accreditation to ensure high-quality, reliable lab results.
Requirements
To be considered for this role, you will need:
- IBMS specialist diploma in medical microbiology or virology (or equivalent postgraduate qualification).
- BSc (Hons) in biomedical science, accredited by IBMS or equivalent.
- IBMS Certificate of Competence (or legacy equivalent).
- Registered with the HCPC and Jersey Care Commission as a biomedical scientist.
- At least 3 years of experience in a medical laboratory, including 2 years in the relevant specialty.
- Post-graduate diploma level knowledge in infection sciences and degree-level knowledge in biomedical science, including molecular genetics, blood science, and infection science.
- Experience as an autonomous practitioner in a specialist setting.
- Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) in line with HCPC standards.
