Summary:

Sanctuary Personnel is seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Clinical Midwifery Leader to join our client's team. In this role, you will provide senior clinical midwifery leadership within their maternity services, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective midwifery care while demonstrating exceptional clinical skills. You will collaborate with other Band 7 Midwifery Clinical Leads to promote excellence in both normal and high-risk antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care. Your responsibilities will include supporting new service development, engaging in governance for maternity, clinical teaching, practice development, and managing a small team of Band 6 midwives and midwifery support workers.

Practice Area Summary:

Their integrated Midwifery, Paediatric, and Neonatal service cares for approximately 500 women and their families annually. The unit comprises an antenatal/postnatal ward, labour ward, antenatal clinic, day assessment clinic, and transitional care. They are committed to the CARE Values Document, embedding these values into their strategy to provide safe, caring, responsive, effective, and well-led maternity care. The team includes seven consultant obstetricians and midwives who support high-risk pregnancies and promote midwifery-led care. They offer comprehensive in-house training, including PROMPT and UNICEF accredited breastfeeding training, with strong links to Quality and Safety for timely incident reporting and learning.

Job Outline:

As a Senior Clinical Midwifery Leader, you will:

  • Lead the development of maternity services, including day assessment clinics, inpatient care, labour wards, and transitional care.
  • Ensure policies and guidelines are current and collaborate closely with obstetric colleagues.
  • Develop hospital-based services in line with local and national objectives.
  • Provide ongoing training and development for staff.
  • Prepare duty rotas, manage long-term shift planning, and cover for ward-based staff.
  • Oversee the induction of new staff and conduct performance reviews.
  • Authorise special duty claims and manage community services in the absence of the community services lead.
  • Deputise for the Lead Midwife when necessary.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain high standards of midwifery practice in line with the NMC Code.
  • Provide leadership, motivation, and purpose to the Midwifery, Paediatrics, and Neonatal team.
  • Attend meetings on behalf of the Head of Midwifery when needed.
  • Manage delegated budgets and maintain communication with other healthcare providers and support groups.
  • Oversee recruitment, selection, and orientation of new staff, manage team allocation, sickness/absence, training needs, and performance reviews.

Role: Communication

  • Promote effective communication among management, midwifery, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ensure high standards of professional documentation and record-keeping.
  • Attend and chair meetings, disseminating information to the team.
  • Use a range of communication skills to interact with parents, relatives, colleagues, students, and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information, including bereavement counselling, and liaise with specialist midwives for intensive support when needed.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Act as a resource of clinical excellence within the team.
  • Challenge and address care standards as necessary.
  • Lead professional decision-making and team working.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate care programmes for mothers and babies.
  • Maintain clinical expertise and take responsibility for community midwifery services in the absence of the community manager.
  • Oversee the Pregnancy Assessment Unit for high-risk pregnancies.

Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the midwifery service.
  • Formulate, review, and update policies and guidelines with the Associate Director, Lead Midwife, and medical staff.
  • Propose and implement clinical practice changes based on current research.
  • Supervise and support junior staff, ensuring adequate staff cover and understanding budgetary constraints.
  • Conduct reviews and investigations of incidents and complaints to ensure lessons are learned.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Utilise leadership skills to maintain morale and effective teamwork.
  • Influence practice changes as needed and provide support on complex issues.
  • Forecast future service requirements and training needs.

Education, Training, and Research:

  • Implement and participate in audit programmes and take action as needed.
  • Use current research to inform service developments.
  • Oversee training and education for staff, facilitating professional development and mandatory training.
  • Provide health and parenting education to parents.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Monitor performance against set standards and take action accordingly.
  • Always work within the NMC Code.

Key Criteria:

  • Registered Midwife with valid NMC registration.
  • Diploma in Midwifery.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Degree to be achieved by 2nd gateway.
  • Comprehensive midwifery skills across all service areas.
