Duties:

  • Conduct comprehensive pre-operative assessments, including medical history, physical examination, and relevant diagnostic tests
  • Identify and evaluate potential risks related to anesthesia and surgery, including allergies, comorbidities, and previous surgical experiences
  • Provide detailed information and education to patients and their families about the upcoming surgery, anesthesia, and post-operative care
  • Give clear instructions regarding fasting, medication adjustments, and pre-surgical preparations
  • Liaise with surgeons, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a cohesive and coordinated approach to patient care
  • Order and review necessary pre-operative tests, such as blood tests, ECGs, and imaging studies
  • Review current medications, advise on necessary changes before surgery, and ensure essential medications are continued
  • Identify and address health issues that need to be optimized before surgery, such as managing blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and respiratory conditions
  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of assessments, care plans, and patient communications
  • Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring their concerns are addressed and they are comfortable with the surgical plan
  • Make referrals to other specialists or services as needed to ensure patients are fully prepared for surgery
  • Implement and adhere to infection control practices to minimize the risk of surgical site infections
  • Provide follow-up care instructions and ensure patients understand the next steps leading up to surgery
  • Be prepared to manage and respond to any medical emergencies that arise during the pre-operative assessment
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss and plan patient care
  • Engage in ongoing education and training to stay current with best practices in pre-operative care

Requirements for the Pre-operative Assessment Nurse role:

  • Degree or equivalent in Nursing (RGN qualified) with active NMC Registration (Adult)
  • Recent nursing experience in the UK
