Job Summary:

Sanctuary Personnel are seeking a skilled and dedicated Senior Theatre Practitioner to join our client's dynamic operating theatre team. The successful candidate will provide expert clinical and technical assistance, participate in patient care assessments, and uphold the highest standards of care. Senior Practitioners will manage both elective and emergency operating sessions, deputise for Team Leaders/Co-ordinators, and support specialty sessions. Weekend work is required approximately once every 3 to 4 weeks, with on-call duties once a week.

Grade and Salary:

  • Band 5: £36,899 - £42,779 BAR £43,954 - £47,590 per annum
  • Band 6: £43,954 - £52,932 BAR £54,643 - £59,343 per annum
  • Enhanced rates for unsocial hours: Monday - Friday (20:00 pm - 06:00 am) – 36%, Saturday – 36%, Sunday and Bank Holidays – 72%

Relationships:

As a Senior Theatre Practitioner, you will collaborate closely with Team Leaders/Co-ordinators and a multidisciplinary team to deliver an efficient and effective surgical service. Completion of a full rotation and specialty-specific competencies is required for this role.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Assess surgical resources for patients with complex needs, including those with undiagnosed conditions.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate care programs to meet patient needs.
  • Guide and support junior staff in patient care.
  • Initiate risk assessments to ensure the safety of patients and staff, taking necessary actions to minimize risks.
  • Lead teams in emergency and acute situations, ensuring patient needs are met and supporting significant others.
  • Utilise data to identify patient problems and guide decision-making.
  • Promote patient involvement in care planning and delivery, respecting their wishes and dignity.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team and other agencies.

Training and Education:

  • Promote health and well-being in patient care.
  • Act as a supervisor, mentor, and preceptor to staff and students.
  • Foster a learning environment conducive to quality education and assessment.
  • Develop learning programs for staff educational needs.
  • Maintain professional development and competence in additional skills.
  • Undertake mandatory training in Manual Handling, Basic Life Support, Fire Safety, and AED training.

Leadership/Managerial:

  • Contribute to the recruitment and retention of team members.
  • Coordinate team activities, ensuring effective communication and addressing work-related issues.
  • Ensure team awareness of organisational objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Conduct professional development reviews and support staff with performance issues.
  • Serve as a professional role model, promoting high standards of practice.
  • Assist with shift planning.

Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with patients and their significant others, considering cultural and cognitive differences.
  • Manage conflicts between individuals, including staff and patients.
  • Act as an advocate for patients, significant others, and junior staff.
  • Ensure compliance with organisational and professional written communication standards.

Audit/Information Technology/Research Activity:

  • Initiate and undertake clinical audits to maintain practice standards.
  • Use critical incident reporting to document risks affecting patient care quality.
  • Promote evidence-based practice.
  • Lead in specific aspects of practice, incorporating new initiatives into staff practices.
  • Access organisational electronic information systems relevant to the role.

Revalidation:

  • Maintain effective registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), adhering to revalidation requirements.
  • Proactively manage revalidation requirements, including maintaining an up-to-date portfolio and seeking opportunities for professional growth.
  • Assist colleagues with their revalidation, providing support and feedback.
  • Escalate any revalidation support needs to a senior nurse or midwife.

Key Criteria:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • RGN or RODP.
  • Minimum of 2 years post-qualifying theatre experience.
  • Completed core competencies at band 5 level.
  • Evidence of CPD at diploma level.
  • Mentorship award.
  • Anaesthetic core competencies (if applicable).
  • Recovery core competencies (if applicable).
  • Scrub competencies and full team rotation completed (if applicable).
  • Paediatric experience for paediatric lead.
  • Ability to work independently in any clinical specialty.
  • Effective leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Proficiency in IT skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good teamwork skills.
  • Calm under pressure in emergency situations.
  • Flexibility.

Full Qualifications:

  • Degree-level qualification.
  • Teaching/assessing and mentorship experience.
  • Leadership course.
  • A1 or NVQ 32/33.
  • Resourcefulness.

  • Anticipate needs and review practices.
  • Change management skills.

This role offers a competitive salary, annual bonus, progressive annual leave, and pension scheme entitlement. Previous NHS service may be considered towards annual leave, maternity leave, and sick pay entitlements. Additionally, an annual bonus of £3,000 is payable on the second and fourth anniversary of employment.

A relocation package is available for those moving to the Bailiwick of Guernsey, offering various solutions based on individual circumstances. Off-Island candidates will receive an 8-year Long Term Employment Permit, allowing family members to work on the Island and access good local schools.
