Job Summary:

Sanctuary Personnel is seeking a dynamic and experienced Band 8a Paediatric & Special Care Unit Lead to join our client's team. This leadership role involves overseeing the Paediatric & Special Care Unit, ensuring high standards of care, and implementing quality assurance initiatives. The successful candidate will provide 24-hour responsibility for the unit, acting as a leader, advisor, and role model.

Summary of Practice Area:

The ward is a general paediatric ward with 9 beds, providing acute hospital care for children from birth to 18 years of age. The ward includes 5 side rooms (one high dependency) and a 4-bed bay. The Special Care unit consists of 3 cots. Care is managed by 5 Paediatric Consultants, each with a special interest area, providing a supportive environment for nurses committed to high-quality care.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the assessment of patients with complex care needs, including undiagnosed conditions.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate care programmes for patients and their families, ensuring they are based on evidence and best practice.
  • Conduct risk assessments to minimise health risks to patients.
  • Support staff to provide clinical expertise, advanced skills, and judgment.
  • Maintain professional clinical leadership and operational management of the service area.
  • Request specific clinical tests within your expertise to establish diagnoses.
  • Promote service user and family involvement in care planning and delivery.
  • Uphold professional standards and ensure effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Engage in regular clinical activities to maintain professional competence.

Training and Education:

  • Promote health and well-being for patients and families, incorporating health promotion into care delivery.
  • Implement supervision within the area.
  • Mentor and supervise students and other learners.
  • Foster an environment conducive to quality learning and assessment.
  • Identify training needs and development opportunities for staff.
  • Ensure safeguarding processes are understood and updated annually.
  • Maintain and develop own professional skills and undertake mandatory training.

Leadership/Managerial:

  • Lead the recruitment and retention of team members.
  • Ensure effective communication systems within staff teams.
  • Advocate for patients and staff, promoting positive experiences.
  • Empower team members to enhance patient care.
  • Ensure team members are aware of organisational policies and procedures.
  • Conduct annual professional development reviews and manage staff performance issues.
  • Act as a professional role model, promoting high standards of practice.
  • Investigate and manage disciplinary and grievance issues.
  • Manage resources within budget constraints and monitor expenditure.
  • Ensure an appropriate skill mix to meet patient needs.
  • Ensure patient information systems are used correctly and comply with data protection regulations.
  • Collaborate with senior management to develop and deliver strategies and innovative models of practice.

Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team, considering cultural and cognitive differences.
  • Manage conflicts between staff, patients, and families.
  • Advocate for patients, families, and staff.
  • Ensure written communication meets organisational and professional standards.

Audit/Information Technology/Research Activity:

  • Coordinate audit activity and ensure staff are aware of critical incident reporting.
  • Use data from patient feedback and incident reports to improve practices.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and incorporate new initiatives.
  • Maintain and present data in electronic and paper formats.

Revalidation:

  • Maintain effective registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) and adhere to revalidation requirements.
  • Manage all aspects of your revalidation, including maintaining a portfolio and seeking opportunities for reflection and professional growth.
  • Support colleagues with their revalidation processes and act as a Confirmer if required.

Key Criteria:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Children’s Nurse/Registered Sick Children’s Nurse and/or Registered Nurse Qualified in Specialty Neonatal Nurse.
  • Teaching/Mentoring qualification.
  • Degree in a related field.
  • Management qualification (to be achieved by the second gateway).
  • Master’s in a related field (to be achieved by the second gateway).

Experience/Knowledge:

  • Experience as a Team Leader coordinating ward activities.
  • Effective communication skills for multidisciplinary team working.
  • Ability to prioritise and organise workload.
  • Evidence of self and professional development.
  • Portfolio demonstrating ongoing professional development.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding training and practices.
