Their Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) has recently benefited from significant funding and a redesign to adopt a new model of care, ensuring that all children and young people receive the support they need to thrive. As a CAMHS Healthcare Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting young people, families, and carers with a person-centred approach, offering practical help and assistance.

CAMHS is a multidisciplinary team that offers a diverse range of professional approaches, including psychiatry, psychology, family therapy, nursing, and mental health practices. They work closely with young people and their families who are experiencing emotional, behavioural, and mental health difficulties.

Job Purpose

  • Work as a specialist dietitian, leading and developing a highly specialist Dietetic Service for children and young people within CAMHS.
  • Provide expert advice and information to patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals regarding the nutritional management of Eating Disorders, ensuring that the guidance is up-to-date and evidence-based.
  • Operate as an autonomous healthcare professional across primary and secondary care, managing the assessment, evaluation, treatment, and management of patients with complex needs.
  • Facilitate and provide learning opportunities and education to healthcare professionals and the wider community on the nutritional management of Eating Disorders to enhance knowledge and understanding.
  • Initiate and participate in evidence-based service development and continuous professional development (CPD) within the dietetic team.
  • Conduct audits and service evaluations within your specialist area to support the development of dietetic strategies and policies, ensuring that research evidence is integrated into practice.

Job Specific Outcomes

  • Hold professional and legal responsibility for a caseload of complex patients with eating disorders as part of CAMHS.
  • Provide specialist nutritional assessment and treatment for children and young people with eating disorders, demonstrating advanced clinical reasoning.
  • Prescribe dietary products and enteral feeds for patients with a range of therapeutic dietary needs.
  • Manage direct referrals from various healthcare professionals, ensuring comprehensive, holistic assessment and treatment.
  • Produce reports for Child Protection conferences, Child in Need meetings, and court proceedings as required.
  • Develop guidelines and policies to enhance the nutritional management of children and young people with eating disorders.
  • Support student dietitians and participate in dietetic/MDT/specialist team meetings, providing clinical expertise.
  • Employ motivational skills to support patients with behavioural change and effectively communicate with patients, staff, and service providers.

Statutory Responsibilities

  • Comply with all relevant statutory responsibilities, including Health and Safety regulations and Data Protection laws.
  • Ensure appropriate communication of patient information through accurate and timely record-keeping, adhering to clinical governance standards.
  • Engage in Clinical Governance activities and propose service delivery improvements as necessary.
  • Stay informed on national and professional policies affecting the specialist area and communicate relevant information to the multidisciplinary team (MDT).

Person Specification

Essential:

  • BSc Hons Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and British Dietetic Association (BDA).
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable:

  • Accredited post-registration training in relevant areas.
  • Membership in specialist interest groups.

Knowledge:

  • Accountability for own work with a clear understanding of the responsibilities of others.
  • Specialist knowledge in dietetic interventions and current best practices for assessment and management.
  • Understanding of confidentiality principles, clinical governance, and audit processes.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years post-registration experience or relevant experience across various clinical settings and specialties.
  • Experience in teaching and training healthcare providers.
  • Experience in research and audit.
