As you can imagine, the whole relocation process can take time – around 18 months to be precise. But it’s absolutely worth it if you want to work as a nurse in America for a minimum of 2.5 years.
What can you expect to be paid?
Rates of pay vary from state to state but typically they range between $26 and $33 per hour, with the likes of New York, Los Angeles and Seattle paying even higher rates.
Most shifts are 12 hours (7 am to 7 pm) but, again, these can vary depending on the city or hospital.
What will your main duties be?
As a nurse in America, your duties are similar to those in the UK. Your primary role will be caring for patients, liaising with other medical staff, administering medicine, checking vital signs, and maintaining patient charts and records.
How much experience do you need?
Alongside 1-2 years of bedside experience, you will need:
An associate degree from an accredited nursing programme, although a bachelor’s degree is preferred
To have already passed or soon to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) that enables you to practice as a nurse in the U.S. This training will be provided and paid for as part of the process
Have completed American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) training
Be AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certified (depending on specialty)
