Main Duties:

  • Conduct psychological assessments for patients/residents in inpatient, day, and outpatient services.
  • Develop and provide individual, family, and group therapeutic interventions/strategies as needed.
  • Manage a caseload and fulfill the responsibilities of a Senior Clinical/Counseling Psychologist within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Report to the Clinical Director and liaise with the relevant Consultant/Psychiatrist on professional and administrative matters.
  • Supervise Student/Trainee/Assistant Psychologists as appropriate.
  • Conduct research, particularly in service evaluation, for patients/residents.
  • Identify the psychological needs of the patient population and propose solutions to the Clinical Director.
  • Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence-based, care planning approach.
  • Provide professional and clinical leadership.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team, participating in meetings/committees and cooperating with team members.
  • Plan the discharge or transfer of patients/residents between services as needed.
  • Maintain records in line with service and professional standards. Stay updated on Clinical Governance and be proficient in conducting audits and data analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations and guidelines.
  • Deliver treatment and care at the highest evidence-based practice standard.
  • Foster good interdisciplinary relationships to enhance and maintain quality patient care.
  • Assist in implementing and monitoring practice developments within the center.
  • Support and advance ICT developments within the center.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all matters concerning patients/residents, staff, and the business of the center.

Requirements of the Senior Psychologist:

  • A recognised third-level degree or diploma (QQI Level 8 equivalent) with first or second class honors in psychology, accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland.
  • A recognised postgraduate professional qualification in Clinical or Counselling Psychology, or an equivalent qualification validated by the Department of Health.
  • At least five years of satisfactory post-graduate experience in professional psychology, with no more than three years spent obtaining the postgraduate qualification and at least two years of full-time post-qualification experience as a Staff Grade Clinical/Counselling Psychologist.
  • The five years’ experience requirement does not include any time beyond the permitted three years for postgraduate training or periods not worked.
  • Demonstrated acquisition of at least 60 days (or equivalent) of supervised clinical placements as part of the professional qualification, or at least 60 days (or equivalent) of post-qualification supervised work experience as a psychologist in adult mental health settings.
  • Post-qualification experience in adult mental health/psychiatry of later life.
  • Experience in a mental health rehabilitation setting/framework.
  • Training in cognitive-behavioral therapy, including CBT for psychosis.
  • Training/expertise in at least one other therapeutic modality (e.g., family therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, emotion-focused therapy, compassion-focused therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy).
  • Training in clinical supervision and experience in providing it.
  • Knowledge and experience of health, safety, and other statutory regulations affecting a healthcare organization.
  • Demonstrated ‘people management’ experience and skills.
  • High-level verbal and non-verbal communication skills to effectively interact with patients, visitors, colleagues, management, and board members.
  • Experience working in a hospital setting.
