Main Duties:
- Working in close liaison with the Physiotherapist, the postholder will help to provide a high quality Physiotherapy service in the Northern Health & Social Care Trust. The post may involve work across trust sites and in the community.
- Within his/her scope of practice, the postholder will independently work with service users allocated by the Physiotherapist and plan review interventions; including providing advice and assistance to carers.
- The postholder will lead and assist with exercise groups which may including fitness sessions, rebound therapy, hydrotherapy, chair based exercises and walking groups. The postholder will be enthusiastic about promoting physical activity in their service area.
- The post holder will assist the Physiotherapist to provide therapy for clients. This will include manual handling of patients who may have complex disability and challenging behaviour.
- The postholder will carry out administrative, clerical and housekeeping duties.
- Manage in close liaison with supervising therapist a caseload of clients who require specialist Physiotherapy intervention; many of these individuals will have multiple pathology, physical disability, mental health problems and challenging behavior.
- Work without direct supervision in hospital and community settings.
- To regularly monitor service users’ progress and report to the Physiotherapist any changes in their condition or variation in expected outcome from treatment and be able to recognise when a Physiotherapist’s opinion is required.
- Within scope of practice, undertake health screening assessments of service users prior to them completing exercises, and by using assessment techniques, analytical and clinical reasoning skills understand when exercise is contra-indicated.
- Formulate and deliver individual physical activity programmes (e.g. exercises, exercise classes).
- Be able to use appropriate outcome measures and goals of treatment agreed with the individual and/or carers.
- Monitor, review and evaluate effectiveness of treatment/physical management programmes, adapting them as necessary
- Assess for and prescribe mobility aids or equipment and assist/advise in the supply and maintenance of other equipment and facilitating access to appropriate services as required (e.g orthotist clinics).
Requirements of the Therapy Assistant
- Recent experience within Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy
- NHS experience would be advantageous but not essential
