Sanctuary Personnel is inviting applications for the position of Basic Clinical/Counselling Psychologist for a permanent full-time role with our client.

About the Role:

Our client provides a spectrum of neuropsychiatric services to adults with a range of serious and enduring mental health needs such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s diseases, as well as early onset dementias, schizophrenia, and mood disorders. This facility uniquely offers specialised care for people with Huntington’s disease and provides specialist palliative care to individuals with mental health needs. The focus is on creating a therapeutic environment through recovery-oriented clinical practices and evidence-based therapeutic interventions, aiming to support patients in achieving their highest level of functioning and quality of life. Care is delivered through a Multidisciplinary Team including colleagues in Psychiatry, Psychology, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language, Dietetics, Physiotherapy, and General Practice. The facility is a 123-bed in-patient mental health service, registered as an approved centre with the Mental Health Commission.

Responsibilities:

Professional and Clinical:

  • Conduct psychological assessments for inpatients, day patients, and outpatients.
  • Develop and provide individual, family, and group therapeutic interventions.
  • Manage a caseload and perform duties as a Basic Clinical/Counselling Psychologist within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Liaise with the Clinical Director and relevant Consultant/Psychiatrist on professional and administrative matters.
  • Conduct research, particularly in service evaluation.
  • Identify and propose solutions for psychology needs within the patient population.
  • Manage patient care using an evidence-based, care planning approach.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams and committees, ensuring effective communication and cooperation.
  • Plan patient discharge or transfer as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional and service records.
  • Stay updated with Clinical Governance and conduct audits and data analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations and guidelines.
  • Promote interdisciplinary relationships to enhance patient care.
  • Support and monitor practice developments and ICT advancements within the centre.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patients, staff, and business matters.

Administration:

  • Perform administrative duties as assigned.
  • Advise on legislation related to psychological practice and education.
  • Document and address complaints as per centre policy.
  • Assist in policy and procedure formulation to ensure high standards of patient care.
  • Participate in educational and clinical committees and task groups.
  • Ensure compliance with Data Protection, GDPR, and Freedom of Information regulations.
  • Promote diversity and respect in the workplace.
  • Ensure comprehensive incident reporting and implementation of recommendations.

Health and Safety:

  • Report and take action on any staff or service user care issues.
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety, infection control, and other established policies.
  • Complete incident and clinical risk reporting.
  • Maintain and safely use department equipment.

Educational and Development:

  • Participate in and promote research within the clinical service.
  • Stay informed on clinical literature and new developments in clinical practice.
  • Attend training programmes, seminars, and conferences as required.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

  • Recognised third level degree or diploma (QQ1 level 8 equivalent) in psychology with first or second-class honours.
  • Recognised postgraduate professional qualification in Clinical or Counselling Psychology, validated by the Department of Health.

Essential:

  • At least 1 year post-graduate experience in professional psychology.
  • At least 60 days supervised clinical placements or equivalent post-qualification supervised work experience in adult mental health.

Desirable:

  • Post-qualification experience in adult mental health/psychiatry of later life.
  • Experience in a mental health rehabilitation setting.
  • Training in cognitive-behavioural therapy.
  • Expertise in additional therapeutic modalities (e.g., family therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy).
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and statutory regulations in healthcare.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience in a hospital setting.
