UK to Australia: Navine’s RMN Journey

By

Introduction:

Relocating to a new country for work can be both exciting and challenging. For Navine, the decision to move from the UK to Australia as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) stemmed from her desire for change, new experiences, and professional growth. Having worked with Sanctuary Personnel in the UK several years ago, she found the opportunity to collaborate with us again—this time for a position in Tasmania—was one she couldn’t pass up. With the team's support, Navine’s relocation went smoothly, and she has since settled into her new role. In this blog, we’ll share Navine’s insights into her journey, from initial contact with Sanctuary to life as an RMN in Australia.

What led you to connect with Sanctuary Personnel?

I first discovered Sanctuary Personnel about five years ago when I received an email with a job advert. That led to my initial work with the company in Birmingham. More recently, a friend shared a job opportunity in Tasmania with me, which brought me back to Sanctuary Personnel, and I was connected with Ryan for the placement.

How long was the process from initial contact to relocation?

The entire process took about four months. I first contacted Sanctuary in July 2023, and by October 2023, I had successfully relocated to Australia.

Why did you want to move to Australia from the UK?

I wanted to move to Australia for a change of lifestyle and the opportunity to work in a different country. I was eager to embrace a new culture, climate, and way of life, and Australia seemed like the perfect place for this exciting new chapter.

Can you describe your first day?

My first day was very reassuring. I was inducted into the workplace by a recruit from Tasmania Health Services, and the entire staff was welcoming and friendly. Since the service specialties were similar to those I had worked with in the UK, no additional training was needed initially. However, they have since offered various training opportunities, which I have eagerly signed up for.

What was your biggest concern during the process, and was it resolved?

My biggest concern throughout the process was securing an extension from AHPRA for my in-person presentation in Australia, as I was still waiting for my visa. Fortunately, this issue was resolved smoothly and without any stress. Ryan and the two recruiters were incredibly reassuring. They explained that they had encountered similar situations before and offered to write a letter to AHPRA in support of my extension request. Thanks to their assistance, the matter was quickly and successfully resolved.

What would you say to someone debating relocating to Australia as an RMN?

In comparing my experience as an RMN in Tasmania to the UK, I’ve found the work environment here to be more relaxed and less demanding. The caseloads are smaller, and there’s a noticeable emphasis on staff well-being. It’s also exciting and refreshing to embrace a different lifestyle, with easy access to beaches and outdoor activities, as well as a vibrant array of restaurants, festivals, and events. Plus, the proximity of neighbouring states allows for short getaways, offering a change of pace and climate throughout the year.
