Preparing for your move to the UK: 7 things to remember
The day you travel will be full of excitement, so here is a list of things to remember before travelling.
1. Mobile phone
Notify your current mobile phone provider that you will be travelling and that you will need data for the first few days.
You may find that a monthly mobile phone contract is cheaper than using an international calling plan. On arrival, you may be able to purchase a SIM card at the airport (look a newsagent). Choose one with plenty of data. The main providers in the UK are EE, Three Mobile, 02, and Vodafone. You can also order one online from providers such as Smarty or GiffGaff. 2. Money
Ensure you have some cash (in GBP) and/or a bank card that works in the UK – we recommend checking out Monzo.
In England, the currency is a mixture of coins and banknotes, ranging from 1p pieces to £50 notes. While cash may be easier when paying for something of low value, paying by card can give you extra security. Find out more about opening a bank account in the UK.
3. Stay charged
Pack a charger and UK plug adaptor. If you don’t have an adapter, these can usually be purchased at the airport.
To ensure you can contact us if needed, it may also be useful to purchase a portable charging power pack for your phone.
4. Important documents
Before you leave the house, double check that your passport and boarding pass are somewhere easily accessible.
You will need your passport not only for this journey, but also for identification or should you wish to travel once you get here, even if this is by train or boat. Travelling to Europe is easy and affordable – With many low-budget airlines and plenty of ferry and train connections, you can be in Paris or Barcelona within a couple of hours.
5. Early bird
Remember to allow yourself plenty of time to check in at the airport as queues may be longer than you are expecting.
Security and check-in is well signposted, so once you arrive you’ll have no trouble finding your way. In the event of queues staff will be stationed around the airport to guide you.
