Pharmacy Technician Pay Rate: £17 - £20 per hour (assignment rate)

Duties of the Pharmacy Technician:

  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures: Operate at all times within the local Standard Operating Procedures relevant to the area of work.
  • Prescription Management: Receive, interpret, validate, dispense, and issue routine and non-routine prescriptions for in-patients and out-patients, seeking advice from senior staff when necessary.
  • Medication Dispensing: Dispense and self-check medications both manually and using a computerised automated dispensing system.
  • Ensure Correct Medication Delivery: Take appropriate actions to ensure patients receive the correct medication, along with advice and counselling, ensuring all directions associated with medicines are fully understood.
  • Aseptic Product Preparation: Accurately reconstitute, compound, and manipulate within an isolator after completing Broth Validation and training, preparing aseptic products including:
    • Parenteral Nutrition
    • Cytotoxic reconstruction
    • Clinical Trials Materials
    • CIVAS
    • Ophthalmic products
    • Monoclonal antibodies
    • Other aseptically prepared products as needed
  • Intrathecal Chemotherapy Preparation: Attain and maintain the skills required to prepare Intrathecal chemotherapy preparations, including initial training, written and practical competence tests, and annual reviews and updates.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Participate in environmental monitoring for a sterile area, including surface sampling, swab testing, plating, and active air sampling according to GMP guidelines under the direction of senior and Principal Technicians.
  • Quality Assurance: Participate in Quality Assurance activities, completing documentation to GMP guidelines and performing audits under the direction of senior and Principal Technicians.
  • Broth Test Maintenance: Maintain a current Universal Broth Test, which is mandatory for performing aseptic manipulations.
  • Clinical Trials Documentation: Accurately record appropriate details according to written protocols for aseptically prepared clinical trials.
  • Prescription and Work Sheet Production: Produce work sheets and prescriptions for parenteral nutrition and cytotoxic preparation using designated computer software (e.g., Datacomp and Ascribe).
  • Volume Checks: Undertake volume checks during the aseptic reconstitution/compounding process after completing a volume checking competence-based assessment.
  • Pharmaceutical Service Support: Order, receive, store, select, assemble, and prepare items for issue by the pharmaceutical service.
  • Special Orders Preparation: Prepare special signed orders for patient-specific Parenteral Nutrition and Cytotoxic preparations.
  • Disclaimer File Maintenance: Maintain an up-to-date disclaimer file for named patient medicines.

 

Requirements of the Pharmacy Technician:

  • GPHC Registration
  • Previous experience within a UK based Pharmacy setting
  • NVQ or equivalent – Pharmacy Technician qualification
