Sanctuary Personnel is currently seeking a Band 4 Pharmacy Technician to join our client's dynamic team.
Job Purpose:
This role involves the manufacturing, dispensing, and providing advice on pharmaceutical products. The successful candidate will work efficiently and safely both on wards and within the pharmacy department, under the supervision of a Pharmacist, adhering to all established policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
Dispensary Duties:
- Accurately interpret and dispense prescriptions validated by a Pharmacist, ensuring clarity where necessary.
- Input patient details into the dispensary computer system, generate labels, and maintain accurate records of medication issues.
- Dispense individual patient requirements from ward order sheets and prescriptions, including Controlled Drugs and extemporaneous preparations.
- Assist with the maintenance of ward stock levels, manage outstanding items, and ensure all dispensed medicines are issued with appropriate patient counselling.
- Support the Clozapine service and demonstrate roles to Pre-Registration Pharmacists, Student Technicians, and Work Experience students as required.
- Participate in weekend and bank holiday rotas or extended hours as needed.
Ward Technician Duties:
- Assess the suitability of patients’ own medications for use in the hospital and check these against prescriptions, addressing any discrepancies with relevant staff.
- Counsel patients on the correct use and care of their medicines and refer any complex queries to Pharmacists or other healthcare professionals.
- Monitor medication adherence and ensure the timely provision of discharge medications.
- Carry out regular stock reviews and manage Controlled Drugs as per hospital policies.
Aseptic Services Duties:
- Interpret prescriptions and prepare aseptic work trays, maintaining high standards of accuracy and safety.
- Independently prepare cytotoxic drugs, parenteral nutrition, and other aseptic products following departmental policies.
- Continuously develop technical competence in aseptic techniques, ensuring compliance with Health and Safety policies.
- Cover organisational duties in the absence of the Senior Technician when trained to competency.
Skills and Requirements:
- Qualifications: NVQ/BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent, and registration as a Pharmacy Technician.
- Experience: Previous experience in a hospital, retail pharmacy, or dispensing practice is desirable.
- Skills: Attention to detail, computer literacy, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills.
- Personal Attributes: Professionalism, responsibility, teamwork, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods, stoop to examine bedside medication lockers, and manage an unpredictable workload.
- Preparedness to work under pressure, deal with potential exposure to harmful substances, and handle distressing patient situations.
Working Conditions:
- Potential exposure to harmful pharmaceuticals and patient infections, crowded workspaces, and extended working hours may be required.
